DIY or Custom Website: How to Choose
Compare maintenance responsibility, portability, integrations and your available time before selecting a website platform.
Compare maintenance responsibility, portability, integrations and your available time before selecting a website platform.
Start with your requirements
List the tasks your customers need to complete: read services, browse work, book an appointment or request an estimate. Identify any existing systems the site must connect to. Ask whether each platform supports those requirements in the plan you would actually buy.
Account for your time
Wix and Squarespace are options to evaluate if you want to manage a site yourself. You still need to organize pages, write accurate copy, provide images and keep details current. A managed custom service moves more of that work to a provider; compare its edit process and support scope.
Ask about portability
Check who controls the domain, what content can be exported, and what happens to forms, subscriptions and integrations if you leave. A downloadable site and a hosted platform may have different migration paths. Get the answer in writing before choosing.
Measure the actual result
No platform name guarantees fast loading, accessibility, rankings or sales. Test representative pages on a phone, review performance evidence and follow the inquiry process. A well-executed simple site may be a better fit than a larger build with unnecessary features.
Compare full proposals
Confirm current vendor prices and features directly with the vendor. Include add-ons and ongoing work in the comparison. Choose a DIY tool if it fits your skills and available time; choose a managed service when the scope and support solve a real business need.
