A Practical Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses

Check eligibility, indexing, useful service pages and genuine reviews before expanding to more locations.

Check eligibility, indexing, useful service pages and genuine reviews before expanding to more locations.

Start with business accuracy

Confirm the real name, contact information, hours and services on your website and relevant profiles. Google Business Profile requires in-person customer contact. If you operate only online, focus on organic discovery and other suitable business profiles rather than creating an ineligible listing.

Check that the important pages can be found

Open your main service and contact pages on a phone. Check links, status codes, titles and a consistent preferred URL. Verify the site in Search Console and inspect priority pages. Submit the sitemap, but understand that submission alone does not ensure indexing.

Make local pages useful

Explain the services you actually deliver in an area, how the work is arranged and what the buyer needs to know. Add permissioned local projects when you have them. A paragraph about landmarks is not a substitute for relevant service information. Do not multiply near-identical pages just to cover keyword combinations.

Earn feedback fairly

Invite honest feedback from real customers without incentives or filtering for positive responses. Correct mistakes and respond constructively. Google describes local ranking through relevance, distance and prominence; it publishes no universal review target that guarantees placement.

Connect visibility to business results

Record which pages bring inquiries and which inquiries become clients. Review the pages with buyer intent before increasing blog volume. Prioritize a broken form or unclear service scope over another schema field.
