Google Maps Ranking: What You Can Influence
Understand relevance, distance and prominence, and avoid treating service-area settings as a way to manufacture proximity.
Understand relevance, distance and prominence, and avoid treating service-area settings as a way to manufacture proximity.
Relevance: describe the actual service
Google says relevance concerns how well a business matches a search. Complete an eligible profile with accurate categories, services, details and hours. Use the website to explain the real offer clearly rather than adding keywords to the business name.
Distance: be honest about location
Distance depends on where the business and searcher are. A city page, a schema radius or a selected service area does not create a physical office in that city. Do not create fictitious locations. Organic service-page visibility and local map results are different opportunities.
Prominence: build real recognition
Google considers how well known a business is, including information such as links and reviews. Earn relevant mentions through actual work, partnerships and useful contributions. Request honest feedback from real customers without incentives or selectively soliciting praise.
Measure locally and carefully
Results can differ by the searcher’s location and query. One search from your own device is not a complete ranking report. Combine available profile data with website inquiries and customer feedback to understand whether the business is reaching the right people.
Work on the useful next improvement
Correct inaccurate details, show genuine work and improve the path to contact. A fixed review count or monthly posting rule does not guarantee placement. Use a wider marketing mix if proximity makes a particular area difficult to serve through Maps.
